Prisoners of Time gathers essays on Prussian and German history, including studies of Bismarck, Wilhelm II, religious attempts to convert Prussian Jews and General Johannes Blaskowitz’s accommodation with the Nazi regime. Across these subjects, Clark examines how political actors understood authority, duty and the historical situations in which they operated.
Other essays address the meaning of battles, the interpretation of political power and the ways historians organise time, causation and change. The collection moves between close studies of individuals and broader reflections on historical method, showing how later assumptions can distort the choices and uncertainties experienced by people in the past.
