Richard Fitzwarren is ordered to find Edward Courtenay, Earl of Devon, during his exile in Italy. Courtenay’s royal descent and association with Wyatt’s Rebellion have made him a continuing threat to Mary I’s government, particularly because marriage to Princess Elizabeth could unite a rival dynastic claim with Protestant opposition. Richard is expected to ensure that the possibility ends permanently.
