Emperor’s Lion
First published 2022
Numidia during Caracalla’s reign. Reports of a threat connected to the officer Marcellus bring Silus to the Roman North African frontier, where forts, desert routes and relations with the Garamantes create a different form of imperial warfare. He enters a unit known as the Lions while searching for the source of the conspiracy.
The mission reaches beyond a single assassin to officials positioning themselves for the emperor’s fall. Caracalla remains protected by the army and by fear, but the careers of Macrinus and Adventus show how quickly men within the praetorian command can become alternatives to the ruler they serve.
