Goff’s service takes him from Crimea to the American Civil War, the Paris Commune and the Anglo-Zulu War. The wide geographical range turns his personal story into a military panorama of an era in which cavalry tradition survives alongside rapidly changing weapons, transport and tactics. Relationships and family ties develop between campaigns, but the regiment remains the institution to which he repeatedly returns, shaping his loyalties and the way he understands courage, duty and loss.
