Jack Selkirk and his Reivers endure blockhouse duty before receiving another hazardous mission during the final phase of the Boer War. They confront an outlaw irregular band and Boer bitter-enders who continue fighting after formal defeat appears inevitable.

Peace returns Selkirk to Scotland, where military experience does not solve the obligations and personal conflicts waiting at home. The novel closes his South African story by contrasting guerrilla war and imperial service with the quieter but no less consequential work of rebuilding a civilian life.
