Spain, 1813. French intelligence officer Pierre Ducos arranges for Sharpe to be accused of murder, placing him under a death sentence and threatening the alliance between Britain and Spain. Sharpe escapes custody and follows the conspiracy through enemy territory in an attempt to prove his innocence. The pursuit converges with Wellington’s campaign and the Battle of Vitoria.

Ducos’s scheme works by turning law and diplomacy into weapons against Sharpe. Clearing his name therefore requires more than defeating an enemy in combat: he must expose a fabrication without damaging Britain’s relationship with its Spanish allies. The approach of Vitoria raises the stakes by placing the personal conspiracy inside one of Wellington’s decisive campaigns of 1813.
