The Cause

First Commandos Captain Harry Curtis is a war hero. After being one of the lucky few to escape the horrendous air raid on St Nazaire, Harry is constantly haunted with the harrowing reminder that so many of his friends and fellow heroes have died, but he remains strong and lives to fight another day. But war waits for no man to recover. He is a major in command of a band of loyal and brave men, so he must be responsible, calm and collected.

Harry and his men are first sent on the seemingly impossible top secret mission of capturing the German Admiral in Algiers, then to undertake a raid on a radar station and to destroy a railway line. Mustafa is merely a guide dreaming of becoming a Commando. And can his and Harry’s terrible secret be kept. or will they have to face the looming consequences of their action, which was all for the good of the mission. Curtis’s operations in Algeria combine raids, sabotage and escape work with the psychological burden left by St Nazaire, presenting elite service as a succession of morally compromised decisions rather than uncomplicated heroism.
