London, 1812. Dora Fitz-Pennington and Jacob Sandys investigate the murders of a French count and his opera-singer wife. The apparent killer then dies by suicide, closing the case too neatly for Dora, and the inquiry acquires consequences for national security during the continuing war with Napoleon.
Jane Austen joins the investigation, bringing an outsider's attention to behaviour, language and social performance. Together they follow the victims' connections through the fashionable world and the criminal underworld, where espionage and private betrayal become difficult to separate.
The year 1812 places the mystery during a difficult phase of Britain’s war with Napoleon, when French intelligence, émigré networks and fears of invasion remain credible concerns. Jane’s observational skills are useful precisely because espionage often hides inside ordinary manners and social access. The novel uses drawing rooms and performance spaces as places where political information can move under cover of polite behaviour.
