In England in 1938, twenty-year-old Cluny Brown lives with the plumber uncle who has raised her and assumes that curiosity is sufficient reason to enter any experience. Her visits to the Ritz and her refusal to observe class boundaries alarm her relatives, who send her into domestic service at the Devonshire country house Friars Carmel.
At the house, Cluny encounters an aristocratic family, a Polish refugee writer and a pharmacist who expects marriage to make her conventional. Her directness exposes the uncertainty beneath the household’s manners as Europe moves towards war. Cluny’s coming of age depends not on learning her assigned place but on recognising where her energy and intelligence can be valued.
