In Devon during the hot summer of 1870, the Sylvester women prepare to welcome Fanny Davis, the small and apparently fragile fiancée of the youngest brother. The farming family values strength, work and direct speech, while Fanny arrives with mysterious ailments and an ability to make every member of the household attend to her needs.
Fanny gradually disrupts the alliances that have kept the farm prosperous and the family united. The story is narrated through the memory of a niece who once admired the newcomer and later understands the methods behind her charm. Originally published in Britain as The Gipsy in the Parlour, the novel appears in later editions under the spelling The Gypsy in the Parlour.
