Louisa Datchett is a thirty-year-old professional dog photographer in 1950s London whose male friends rely on her for practical help, emotional advice and domestic rescue. Tired of being indispensable without being chosen, she decides that independence has become less satisfying than marriage and begins evaluating the men around her as possible husbands.

Louisa approaches courtship with the same efficiency she brings to work, but each candidate reveals the limits of treating marriage as a solution to loneliness. Her search moves through flats, studios and country houses while social expectations for unmarried women compete with the freedom she already possesses. The comedy asks whether something light can become a durable form of happiness.
