Burma ’44

In early 1944, Japanese forces attack the British Fifteenth Corps in the Arakan and surround the administrative area known as the Admin Box. Rather than retreat through the jungle, the defenders form a perimeter and rely on air supply while tanks, artillery and infantry resist repeated assaults.

Holland reconstructs the battle through soldiers, medical staff and commanders, explaining why the defence marked a change in the Burma campaign. The Japanese method of cutting supply lines no longer guarantees victory when Allied aircraft can sustain isolated troops. The Admin Box becomes evidence that the army defeated in 1942 has learned how to fight and survive in the jungle.
