At the beginning of the American Civil War, communities near the border between North and South divide before armies have established clear fronts. Families, neighbours and former friends are required to declare loyalty, while rumours of spies and armed irregulars make neutrality increasingly impossible.
The novel follows characters pulled into the conflict by local violence and political allegiance rather than formal military ambition.
