November 1471. Margaret Beaufort is newly widowed, Edward IV is secure on the throne and Henry Tudor remains in exile in Brittany. With few open protectors, Margaret can do little except preserve her household and wait for a political opportunity. That precarious position becomes more dangerous when a band of Spanish mercenaries known as the Garduna is reported to be travelling to England.

A visitor is then murdered inside a locked room in Margaret’s London house, beginning a sequence of threats that suggests someone is deliberately closing in on her. Christopher Urswicke must determine who hired the mercenaries, how the apparently impossible murder was committed and whether the danger comes from Yorkist enemies or from someone much closer to Margaret’s own circle.
