Vincent Wingfield, a young Virginian who opposes slavery but remains loyal to his home state, enters Confederate service when the American Civil War begins. He serves principally with the Army of Northern Virginia and experiences major campaigns associated with Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
The novel follows Vincent through battle, scouting, capture and escape while his family and plantation remain exposed to the social upheaval of the war. Henty’s treatment reflects the pro-Confederate assumptions of its period, making the book useful both as an adventure narrative and as an example of the romanticised view of the slaveholding South common in some late-Victorian British writing.
