Germany, 1945. Klara Janowska and her daughter Alicja reach Graufeld Displaced Persons camp after weeks on the road, joining thousands of people uprooted by the destruction of the Second World War. Their immediate aim is to survive the camp and find a route back to Poland, but the apparent safety of the post-war settlement is fragile.
Klara recognises a man connected with her wartime past, and each knows something that could destroy the other. Their confrontation turns the camp into the setting for a dangerous struggle over identity, guilt and silence. The novel focuses on the uncertain months after victory, when refugees, former prisoners and displaced families were still living between countries and when survival often depended on documents, memory and the ability to conceal what had happened during the war.
