As political tension grows and old choices return to threaten them, the sisters are forced to decide what they owe to each other and what they are prepared to sacrifice. Personal betrayal becomes inseparable from the atmosphere of appeasement, ideological division and military anxiety surrounding pre-war France. The novel uses the approach of the Second World War to intensify a family story built around secrecy, courage and competing forms of loyalty.
