The Crash
First published 2024
Paris, Christmas 1933. When the Strasbourg express crashes into another train outside the capital, Gilles Malroux uses the chaos to exchange identity papers with a dying stranger, takes a suitcase and disappears. His sister Camille reaches the hospital expecting to find him and instead discovers a badly injured man carrying Gilles's documents and unable to explain who he really is.
Camille's search leads through Parisian hospitals, back streets and the Louvre into a network connected with stolen antiquities and criminal dealings. The story takes the real Lagny-Pomponne railway disaster as its starting point, using one of France's deadliest rail accidents to launch a mystery about identity, family loyalty and survival in interwar Paris.
