Carried into the South Atlantic aboard a suspicious vessel, he encounters criminals, coerced crewmen and a voyage whose true purpose is concealed behind wealth and social privilege.
The novel shifts the Mendick mysteries from British streets to the international routes of Victorian shipping. Isolation at sea removes the institutional support of the police and forces Mendick to investigate within a closed, dangerous community governed by rank, money and control of the ship.
