An elderly Soviet émigré is murdered in London after trying to contact the Circus. George Smiley recognises details that connect the death to Karla, the Soviet spymaster who defeated him and ran the mole inside British intelligence.
Following a trail through Hamburg, Paris and divided Berlin, Smiley identifies a private vulnerability that may force Karla to defect. The pursuit offers professional victory at the cost of using another person's family with the same cold calculation Smiley has condemned in his adversary.
Smiley's final campaign mirrors Karla's own methods. Rather than uncovering a public ideological weakness, he identifies a private attachment and uses bureaucratic pressure to make that vulnerability unbearable. The victory is therefore morally compromised from the start, closing the rivalry by showing that the patient intelligence officer can defeat his adversary only by adopting the same willingness to exploit family and fear.
