Scotland, 1267. Four years after Largs, Sir William Douglas answers a papal appeal for crusading service and leaves the disputes of his homeland for the eastern Mediterranean. The journey places him among knights whose vows conceal different ambitions and whose ideas of honour are tested by distance, disease and unfamiliar warfare.

In the remaining Crusader States, William encounters alliances and rivalries that cannot be understood as a simple struggle between faiths.
