Archibald the Grim Series

The Archibald the Grim novels follow Archibald Douglas, the illegitimate son of James ‘the Black’ Douglas, from an uncertain childhood during the Second War of Scottish Independence to his emergence as one of the most formidable magnates of fourteenth-century Scotland. Raised amid exile, invasion and disputed loyalties, Archibald must earn land, rank and trust in a kingdom repeatedly threatened by English armies and internal rivalry.

The five-book sequence moves from the disasters of Dupplin Moor, Halidon Hill and Neville’s Cross into the later reign of David II and the renewed Anglo-Scottish war of 1385. It combines biography, border warfare and political intrigue, showing how the man remembered as Archibald the Grim built the Douglas power in Galloway through service, calculation and a willingness to continue fighting after more celebrated heroes were dead.
