Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas, was a powerful Scottish nobleman and soldier known as Archibald the Grim. He consolidated Douglas lands in southern Scotland, defended the border and became one of the dominant magnates of Robert II’s reign.
His authority rested on military experience, territorial expansion and close involvement in royal government. He strengthened the Black Douglas dynasty whose power would shape Scottish politics for much of the fifteenth century.
