In November 1919, evidence emerges that Rutledge may have helped send an innocent man to the gallows before the war. At the same time, a sequence of attacks on former soldiers draws him into a new investigation whose victims seem connected only by military service. The possibility of an earlier professional failure intensifies his fear that shell shock has damaged the judgement on which his career depends.
The mystery asks whether legal certainty can survive the discovery of suppressed evidence. Veterans are both victims and suspects in a society that praises their service while misunderstanding their injuries. Rutledge must re-examine the confidence of his pre-war self and decide whether doubt is a weakness or the beginning of justice.
