Hank Morgan, a nineteenth-century Connecticut engineer, is struck unconscious and wakes in the legendary Britain of King Arthur. Condemned as a dangerous stranger, he uses knowledge of an eclipse to establish himself as a magician more powerful than Merlin and becomes the king's principal adviser.
Hank attempts to replace feudal institutions with schools, factories, newspapers and modern weapons, believing technical knowledge will produce political liberty. The experiment instead exposes the violence within chivalry, monarchy, organised religion and industrial warfare. The novel was also published under the British title A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur.
