Huckleberry Finn escapes his violent father by staging his own death and hides on an island in the Mississippi, where he meets Jim, an enslaved man who has fled after learning that he may be sold away from his family. They travel by raft, hoping to reach a route toward freedom.
Their journey passes feuding families, wrecked boats, fraudulent performers and communities shaped by slavery and racial violence. Huck's central conflict is moral: the society that educated him calls helping Jim a crime, while his experience of Jim's humanity makes betrayal increasingly impossible. The novel first appeared in Britain in 1884 and in the United States in 1885.
