Lancelot

Lancelot is a legendary knight of King Arthur’s Round Table, celebrated in medieval romance as an exceptional warrior. His adulterous love for Queen Guinevere creates a conflict between personal devotion, chivalric loyalty and the unity of Arthur’s court.

Lancelot became one of the most important knights of the Round Table in medieval French romance, especially in the Lancelot-Grail cycle. His exceptional prowess is inseparable from his adulterous love for Queen Guinevere, a relationship that contributes to the collapse of Arthur’s fellowship. Later English tradition, above all Malory’s Le Morte Darthur, made the conflict between chivalric loyalty, religious aspiration and forbidden love central to his character.

Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court makes Lancelot part of the courtly world that resists Hank Morgan’s attempt to replace chivalry with technology and republican reform. John Steinbeck’s The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights introduces Lancelot among the Round Table stories whose loyalties and desires begin to threaten Arthur’s ideal. Victor Canning’s The Circle of the Gods recasts him as Lancelo, one of the warriors who gathers around the emerging leader Arturo in a fragmented fifth-century Britain. Peter Ackroyd’s The Death of King Arthur places Lancelot’s love for Guinevere at the centre of the divisions that destroy the fellowship. Canning’s The Immortal Wound carries its more historical reconstruction towards Camlann, using the war-band tradition behind Lancelot to bridge imagined post-Roman warfare and later legend.
