Kemp: The Road to Poitiers

by Jonathan Lunn Book 8 in the Arrows of Albion series.

4.5(919)

In September 1356 Martin Kemp rides with the Black Prince’s chevauchée across France. The English army burns and plunders as it seeks to join the Duke of Lancaster, but destroyed bridges across the Loire and the approach of a larger French force compel a retreat through exhausted country.

Near Poitiers the English are cut off, short of supplies and forced to prepare a defensive position. Kemp and the archers must test the methods used at Crécy against King John II’s army, while Sir Geoffroi de Charny carries the Oriflamme into a battle that will decide the fate of commanders and kings.
