The struggle against the Hyksos becomes a contest between rival crowns, competing claims to legitimacy and the survival of the Theban cause. Ahhotep must sustain resistance while royal deaths, military reverses and shifting alliances threaten the campaign to free Egypt. The novel places her at the centre of a war in which family loyalty, statecraft and sacred kingship are inseparable from battlefield necessity.

Ahhotep's authority is especially important because the war is fought across generations of the Theban royal house. Every death creates a succession problem as well as a military loss, while Hyksos control in the north makes legitimacy something that must be defended through both ritual and force. The novel treats liberation as a dynastic project whose success depends on keeping a fractured royal cause coherent.
