Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, crosses to Ireland with a small but experienced force after being invited into the dynastic struggle for Leinster. Assisted by the Warlord and several hundred knights, he turns an initially limited intervention into the seizure of territory and the creation of a new power base across the Irish Sea.

Success creates a problem for Henry II, who cannot allow an English magnate to build an independent kingdom unchecked. The novel follows conquest from private expedition toward royal involvement, linking Ireland with campaigns in Scotland and the Welsh Marches. The Warlord and his son serve through a period in which service to the crown increasingly means fighting on several frontiers of the Angevin world.
