East Indiaman
William is an orphan surviving among the wharves and alleys of East London, where petty theft is less a choice than a means of eating. Life among the dockside ‘wharf rats’ teaches him speed, suspicion and the value of disappearing before trouble arrives, but one theft too many places him in danger from people with far greater power than his own.
His escape from the docklands carries him towards the maritime world of Britain’s expanding trade with India. Ships, soldiers and the East India Company offer a route out of London, but they also place a streetwise boy inside a harsher imperial system where survival depends on adapting old skills to unfamiliar dangers.
