Anne of Cleves travels to England in 1539 for an arranged marriage to Henry VIII, while Jane Boleyn returns to court carrying the dangerous legacy of her executed husband and sister-in-law. The king quickly rejects Anne and turns his attention to the young Catherine Howard.

The three women narrate a court in which marriage, testimony and faction can determine survival. Anne negotiates a safe annulment, while Catherine and Jane become trapped by concealed relationships and Henry’s increasingly arbitrary power.

The three narrators expose different strategies for surviving Henry VIII’s court. Anne accepts the loss of queenship in exchange for independence and property, Catherine mistakes royal desire for lasting security, and Jane discovers that service to powerful relatives cannot erase earlier complicity. Their intersecting stories make the court a system in which female status can rise rapidly but remains dependent on the king’s changing interpretation of loyalty.
