Set in 1800 in the waters around Jamaica, Ramage and the Rebels begins as HMS Calypso searches for freebooters and instead finds the wreck of a British vessel whose passengers and crew have been murdered by a French privateer. The discovery turns a routine patrol into a pursuit driven by anger as well as duty.
Ramage and his men set out to identify the raider and bring him to account, but the hunt takes place in waters where privateering, piracy and formal naval war overlap. Pope gives the chase a personal intensity without losing sight of the wider Caribbean conflict: merchant shipping remains vulnerable, information is uncertain and a fast enemy can disappear among islands and neutral ports. The Calypso's crew must combine disciplined naval methods with the persistence of hunters following a single elusive opponent.
