Set in 1797 during the French Revolutionary Wars, Governor Ramage R.N. sends HMS Triton across the Caribbean as escort to a merchant convoy. Ramage's task is complicated by Rear-Admiral Goddard, an old enemy of his family who remains determined to discredit him, and by French privateers able to exploit the convoy's slow and vulnerable formation.
A hurricane turns naval duty into a survival crisis. Ships are scattered or wrecked, and Ramage finds himself responsible for Royalist refugees, merchant sailors and his own crew on a remote island. His improvised role as governor is complicated by hints of buried pirate treasure and by the knowledge that Goddard is waiting in Jamaica for grounds to court-martial him. The novel combines convoy warfare, tropical weather and shipwreck with the political vulnerabilities of a young officer serving far from the Admiralty.
