In Times of Peril

The Warrener family is living in a British cantonment in India when the uprising of 1857 turns an apparently secure military community into a place of immediate danger. Ned and Dick Warrener, their sister Kate and cousin Rose are separated by the fighting and forced to rely on disguise, endurance and help from loyal allies as rebellion spreads through northern India.

Ned and Dick become directly involved in military operations, carrying messages and moving between threatened British positions while family members face siege and flight. Their adventures bring them into the campaigns around Cawnpore and Lucknow and into contact with the brutal reprisals of the conflict. The novel treats the rebellion through one family whose ordinary colonial life is overturned almost overnight by the collapse of the army and administration around them.
