Book
With the British Legion
First published 1903
After repeated trouble at school, Arthur Hallett looks for a way to prove himself and enlists in the British Legion sent to Spain during the First Carlist War. The unit fights for the government of Queen Regent Maria Christina against the Carlists supporting Don Carlos, but poor supply and official neglect make service nearly as dangerous as the enemy.
Arthur’s early desire for adventure gives way to a more serious understanding of soldiering as he experiences hunger, disease, hard campaigning, capture and close combat. His advancement through the Legion reflects both his growing competence and the extraordinary losses suffered by the British volunteers in Spain.
