True to the Old Flag
First published 1885
True to the Old Flag follows a young British loyalist through the American Revolutionary War. As rebellion spreads through the colonies, he remains attached to the Crown and experiences a conflict in which neighbours, families and local communities are divided as sharply as the opposing armies.
The story moves through campaigns, marches and battles while presenting the war from a perspective less common in later American adventure fiction. Encounters with commanders such as George Washington place the fictional action alongside the major events of the struggle, but the central question remains what loyalty costs when political allegiance determines where a person can safely live.
