James Walsham grows up in Sidmouth with little enthusiasm for the medical career planned for him. A series of accidents and opportunities carries him first to sea and then into military service in North America, where Britain and France are fighting for control of the continent.
James joins the campaigns of the French and Indian War and eventually serves with James Wolfe in the operations against Quebec. His adventures combine wilderness movement, irregular warfare and formal battle, while an old rivalry from England continues to affect his private life even as his military responsibilities grow.
