Roger Hawkshaw sails from Plymouth aboard the Swan on a trading voyage intended to challenge Spanish control of commerce in the New World. Shipwreck leaves him the vessel’s sole survivor in Mexico before the arrival of Hernán Cortés. Taken into Indigenous society rather than the Spanish expedition, Roger learns local languages and customs and forms loyalties that complicate everything that follows.
When Cortés begins his campaign against the Aztec Empire, Roger becomes a witness to the alliances, rivalries and violence surrounding the conquest. His position between Europeans and the people who have sheltered him gives the adventure an unusual perspective, carrying him through Tenochtitlan, rebellion, escape and the struggle for survival as Spanish power advances.
