Guy Aylmer, the young English squire of Sir Eustace de Villeroy, travels to France while the feud between the Burgundian and Orléanist factions is tearing the kingdom apart. Charged with protecting Lady Margaret de Villeroy and her children, Guy becomes caught in sieges, street violence and the rule of the militant Parisian faction known as the White Hoods.

After surviving the factional struggle and helping his charges escape danger in Paris, Guy later returns to France in the service of Henry V. His personal story converges with the English invasion of 1415 and the Battle of Agincourt, linking the civil conflict within France to the campaign that allows Henry to exploit that division.
