Sixteen-year-old Edgar Ormskirk lives near Dartford as resentment over taxation and serfdom builds towards the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. Better educated and more sympathetic to the grievances of ordinary people than many of his social equals, Edgar nevertheless becomes caught in the violence that follows Wat Tyler’s rising and the rebels’ march on London.

Together with his friend Albert de Courcy, he witnesses the crisis around the young Richard II, street fighting and attacks on foreigners before later adventures take the pair into the political conflicts of Flanders. The novel combines the revolt’s social tensions with the choices faced by young men whose loyalty to the Crown does not prevent them from recognising the causes of popular anger.
