The mystery unfolds in the final months of Mary I’s reign, when Elizabeth’s position as likely successor remains politically fraught. Thomas Seymour’s execution and his documented relationship with the teenage Elizabeth provide the historical backstory, while his apparent return, the murders and the central conspiracy are fictional. William Cecil and Robert Dudley also appear under their historical identities.
