Leanda de Lisle is a British historian and author specialising in Tudor and Stuart Britain, with particular emphasis on dynastic politics, monarchy and the lives of women whose reputations were shaped by later political or religious narratives. Born in Westminster, London, she studied History at Somerville College, Oxford, before working as a newspaper and magazine columnist and then concentrating increasingly on historical writing. Her books are written as narrative history rather than academic monographs, but they draw closely on contemporary correspondence, political records and archival material. She has also appeared regularly on television and radio and written for publications including The Times, History Today, BBC History Magazine and The Spectator.

Her books concentrate particularly on the transition from the Tudors to the Stuarts. After Elizabeth: The Death of Elizabeth and the Coming of King James examines the succession crisis surrounding Elizabeth I’s death in 1603, while The Sisters Who Would Be Queen tells the intertwined stories of Lady Jane Grey and her sisters Katherine and Mary Grey. Tudor: The Family Story follows the dynasty from its fifteenth-century origins through Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I, placing the familiar monarchs within the wider Tudor family. White King reassesses Charles I and the political and personal failures that led to civil war and his execution, while Henrietta Maria: The Warrior Queen Who Divided a Nation shifts attention to Charles’s queen and her role during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Across these works de Lisle is particularly interested in succession, legitimacy, religion, marriage and the ways later generations turned complicated historical figures into simplified heroes or villains.
