January 1066. Eighteen-year-old Thurkill, a young huscarl in the service of Harold Godwinson, is drawn into the succession crisis created by the death of Edward the Confessor. As Tostig Godwinson and Harald Hardrada threaten from the north and William of Normandy prepares his invasion across the Channel, Thurkill wants only the chance to prove himself in the shield wall. His path takes him through the campaign that ends at Stamford Bridge and then south again towards the far greater disaster waiting at Hastings.
Bernardi places a fictional warrior inside the rapid sequence of real events that transformed England in 1066. Thurkill’s ambitions for honour and revenge are repeatedly overwhelmed by decisions made by kings and earls, while the cost of warfare is carried back into his family and village. The novel combines coming-of-age adventure with the military collapse of Harold’s kingdom and the beginning of the Norman conquest.
