This biography reconstructs the life of William Ashby (1536–1593), an Elizabethan diplomat and intelligence agent who worked within the network of Sir Francis Walsingham. Drawing on correspondence and archival evidence, Timothy Ashby follows his ancestor through education, travel, service in the Low Countries and the intelligence work that brought him into the political struggle between Protestant England and its Catholic rivals.

The book concentrates particularly on Ashby’s ambassadorship to Scotland from 1588 to 1590, when relations with James VI, the aftermath of the Spanish Armada and the threat of renewed Spanish intervention made diplomacy inseparable from espionage. His career provides a detailed route into Anglo-Scottish politics, confessional conflict and the practical operation of Elizabethan intelligence at the end of the sixteenth century.
