The Special Operations Executive was created by Britain to encourage sabotage, subversion and resistance in occupied Europe. In France, SOE agents worked with local networks, arranged drops, carried messages, organised wireless traffic and supported attacks on German communications and transport.
SOE work was exceptionally dangerous. Agents operated under false identities, depended on insecure local contacts and risked torture or execution if captured. Women served as couriers, wireless operators and organisers, making the clandestine war a major setting for gendered courage and exposure.
