London, 1940. As the capital endures German bombing, John Cook is pulled away from rural Sussex by the disappearance of a young woman during an air raid. Across the Channel, Lady Margaret is working in occupied France, attempting to gain the confidence of figures close to the German war machine while remaining useful to Britain. Their separate missions gradually converge as both confront the risks of espionage in a war increasingly fought through secrets as well as armies. The novel moves between bombed London and occupied France, extending the John Cook series beyond invasion preparations into active intelligence work.
