Lady Susan follows the recently widowed Lady Susan Vernon as she manipulates relatives, admirers and her daughter Frederica while pursuing financial and social security. The Watsons begins when Emma Watson returns to an impoverished family she barely knows and discovers that limited money, marriage prospects and sibling rivalry sharply restrict her choices.
Sanditon, left unfinished at Austen’s death, takes Charlotte Heywood to a speculative seaside resort promoted by the energetic Mr Parker. Among invalids, investors and visitors, Charlotte observes a community attempting to manufacture fashion and prosperity through property development, health cures and social display. Together, the three works show Austen testing courtship, dependence and ambition in forms she did not complete as full-length novels.
