Damocles de Warrenne grows up in British India under the shadow of an overwhelming terror of snakes. When circumstances force him to confront the thing he most dreads, courage becomes a psychological struggle rather than a matter of physical strength alone.

Wren combines an Anglo-Indian coming-of-age story with romance, mystery and the culture of imperial soldiering. The novel questions the easy assumption that bravery is simply the absence of fear: Dam must understand his own mind, withstand humiliation and act despite panic. Its melodramatic plot is anchored by a sustained treatment of trauma, masculinity and the social pressure to appear invulnerable.
