The surviving friends and relatives of the Geste brothers are drawn into another dispute over inheritance, identity and a legacy whose value is as dangerous as the Blue Water sapphire once was. The trail leads back toward the colonial and military world associated with the Gestes, where old loyalties and carefully preserved secrets determine who can be trusted.

Published after the main trilogy, Spanish Maine functions as a fourth Geste novel rather than a simple repetition of Beau Geste. It returns to Wren’s favourite contrast between an English family mystery and the anonymity of service abroad. Adventure provides the movement, but the deeper subject is heritage: what the living inherit from acts of sacrifice they only partly understand.
